Yes, in a good way. God is easy to please because he is a loving Father who delights in his children and accepts us through Jesus, not our performance. But he is impossible to satisfy because he loves us too much to leave us the way we are. He is always cheering us on and always inviting us to grow to become more like Jesus.
God Delights in His Children
Think about a toddler taking his very first steps. He wobbles, takes two shaky steps and falls on his face. What do his parents do? They don’t scold him for falling. They scream, clap, grab their phones and send the video to everyone they know. Those two steps made them incredibly happy.
That is a picture of how God feels about you. Many students picture God as a strict coach who is always disappointed, or a teacher with a red pen waiting for mistakes. The Bible paints a very different picture.
Psalm 103:13-14 As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.
God knows exactly how you are made. He isn’t surprised by your weaknesses or shocked when you stumble. When you trust Jesus, you are fully accepted because of what Jesus did on the cross, not because you finally got your act together. So when you take a small step toward him, like praying before a test or choosing kindness when someone is rude, God is genuinely pleased.
God Loves You Too Much to Leave You the Same
Back to that toddler. His parents are thrilled with those first steps, but they would be worried if he was still wobbling across the living room at age fifteen. Their joy in his first steps doesn’t mean they want him to stop there. They want him to walk, then run, then grow into everything he was made to be.
Philippians 1:6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
This is what it means that God is impossible to satisfy. It isn’t that he is never happy with you. It is that he has big plans for you and he is committed to finishing what he started. God isn’t content to leave you stuck in the same habits, attitudes and sins. He keeps working because he loves you, not because he is disappointed in you.
Growing Up in Your Faith
So what does this look like day to day? Spiritual growth doesn’t happen by accident, but it also doesn’t happen by trying harder to impress God. It happens as you spend time with him and let him change you from the inside out. Think of it less like cramming for a final and more like a friendship that grows deeper the more time you spend together.
2 Peter 3:18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.
Growing in grace might look like reading a little of the Bible each day, getting involved in a student group at church, being honest with a trusted friend about what you are struggling with or serving others when no one is watching. Don’t compare your growth to anyone else’s. God is working in you at the pace he knows is best, and every step forward matters to him.
