How can Christians change the world? The Bible’s answer is surprisingly personal. We change the world by helping other people follow Jesus, one relationship at a time. Whether you call it parenting, discipling, or mentoring, Scripture calls it speaking the truth in love. You don’t need a platform or a seminary degree. With the power of the Holy Spirit, the greatest thing you can do is help someone else pursue God.

Jesus Changed the World Through People

When Jesus launched the movement that would reshape history, he didn’t start with armies, political power, or a marketing campaign. He invested deeply in a small group of ordinary people, taught them, corrected them, and then sent them out to do the same with others. Before he returned to heaven, he made that strategy their lifelong mission.

Matthew 28:19-20 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Notice that Jesus didn’t say to make converts or fill buildings. He said to make disciples, people who learn to follow and obey him over a lifetime. That kind of growth happens best in relationships, which means every follower of Jesus has a part to play. When one person helps another grow, and that person helps someone else, the impact multiplies far beyond what any one leader could accomplish.

Speaking the Truth in Love

Much of discipleship happens through our words. An honest conversation, a word of encouragement, a gentle challenge, or a well-timed piece of biblical wisdom can redirect the course of someone’s life. Many of us can name a parent, coach, or friend whose words shaped who we are today.

Ephesians 4:15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.

Paul holds two things together here. Truth without love can be harsh and hurtful, and love without truth leaves people stuck where they are. Speaking the truth in love means caring enough to be honest and being honest in a way that shows you care. It’s not always comfortable to give or to receive, but it’s one of the main ways God grows his people to maturity.

You Don’t Have to Feel Qualified

Most Christians don’t feel ready to disciple anyone. We worry we don’t know enough of the Bible, that our own lives are too messy, or that we’ll say the wrong thing. The good news is that God never asked us to do this in our own strength. Jesus promised his followers a power source.

Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

The first disciples were fishermen, a tax collector, and other everyday people. The Holy Spirit gave them the courage and wisdom they needed, and he does the same for us. You don’t have to be an expert. You just have to be a step or two ahead of someone and willing to share what God has taught you.

Pass It On

Paul understood that the gospel would only keep spreading if every generation passed it on. Near the end of his life, he wrote to his young protégé Timothy and reminded him to keep the chain going.

2 Timothy 2:2 And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.

That single verse describes four generations of disciples: Paul, Timothy, reliable people, and others. That’s how world change happens. Think about who God has placed in your life, whether a child, a coworker, a younger believer, or a friend who is curious about faith. Helping just one of them take the next step toward Jesus is an investment that can echo for generations.

The Takeaway

Christians change the world the same way Jesus did: by investing in people. As we speak the truth in love and rely on the Holy Spirit’s power, ordinary believers can help others follow Jesus, who will in turn help others. The greatest thing you can do is help someone else pursue God.

Discuss and Dive Deeper

Talk about it:

  1. Read “The Takeaway” above as a group. What are your initial thoughts about the article?
  2. If you could change one small, everyday thing about the world, what would it be?
  3. Read Matthew 28:16-20. Why do you think Jesus chose to change the world through relationships rather than power or programs?
  4. Share about a time someone spoke the truth in love to you. Was it hard to receive at first, and how did it affect your life?
  5. Read Ephesians 4:11-16. Why is it important to keep truth and love together, and which one comes more naturally to you?
  6. What barriers keep you from helping others grow in their faith, and how does the promise of the Holy Spirit speak to those fears?
  7. Who is one person God has placed in your life that you could help take a next step toward Jesus, and what might that look like this month?
