If you want to create a discipleship culture in your church, you will have to learn how to connect your mentors with the people who need help.

Talking Points:

  • Making a handoff takes a heavy dose of “marketing,” selling the idea to the person who needs help. Leverage your pastoral equity to normalize it. Ephesians 4:11-12
  • Prep the mentor by explaining the need and assigning a category for them to start with. Follow up within 24 hours with the mentee by phone or text. 
  • If necessary, meet with the mentor and mentee and make the handoff. Do this for up to 4 meetings until the mentor is ready to take the lead.
  • Follow up with the mentor for support and ongoing training. This includes helping to discern when the time is right the complete The Pursuit.
Discussion Questions
  1. What is your initial reaction to this video? What jumped out at you?
  2. How many people are you directly trying to lead right now? How is it working for you? On a scale of 1-10, how stressed are you as a pastor?
  3. On average, how many people do you connect with for pastoral care each week? In the long run, is it helping them? Give some specific examples.
  4. How would a handful of trustworthy mentors impact your church? How would it impact your personal ministry schedule? Answer these questions for other areas of ministry in your church.
  5. Do you think it would work to do the “handoff” as described above? Why or why not?
  6. Make a short list of people you would like to equip as mentors. Talk about a strategy to train them and connect them through handoffs.
