A runner laces up their shoes and takes the first step down the sidewalk. Nobody finishes a marathon in one giant leap. It takes one step, then another, then another. Building good habits works the same way. A life that pleases God isn’t built with one big heroic act. It’s built one small choice at a time.
Walk With the Holy Spirit
The Bible says the way to good habits is to walk with God’s Spirit every day.
Galatians 5:16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
“The flesh” means our old, selfish side. It pushes us toward bad habits like slamming doors, complaining, or ignoring chores. But the Holy Spirit gives us power to make wise choices instead.
Small Steps Every Day
Walking with the Spirit looks like everyday choices: obeying your parents, saying kind words, reading your Bible, and praying. The Bible says, “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit” (Galatians 5:25). Each good choice is one more step, and over time those steps become good habits.
Keep Practicing
Paul told Timothy to “train yourself to be godly” (1 Timothy 4:7). Training takes practice. You won’t get it right every time, and that’s okay. When you stumble, get back up and take the next step with Jesus.
The Takeaway
Good habits are built one step at a time with the Holy Spirit’s help. This week, before a tough choice, do a direction check: “Is this next choice a step toward Jesus or away from him?” Then choose patience, self-control, or kindness.
