Have you ever knocked someone over by accident during tag, or broken your brother’s or sister’s favorite toy? Your stomach drops, and you get ready for someone to be mad. But what if, instead, they hugged you and said, “It’s okay”? That’s a picture of grace. Grace is kindness we don’t deserve and can’t earn.

This is part of The Grid for Kids. Your “grid” is like a sifter in your heart. It’s made of Bible truths that help you keep the good ideas and toss out the bad ones.

The Rock of Grace

The fifth rock in your Bible grid is grace. We all deserve to be punished for our sin. But God gives us the opposite of what we deserve.

Ephesians 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.

Grace is a gift. You can’t earn it by being extra good. God gives it freely because he loves you (Romans 5:8).

God Doesn’t Shame Us

When we mess up, God doesn’t push us away or call us names. He forgives us and wraps us in his love. That’s why we can run to him, not away from him, when we do something wrong.

Pass It On

Since God has given us so much grace, he wants us to give grace to others. That might mean forgiving a classmate who spilled water on your drawing or not yelling at a teammate who dropped the ball.

Colossians 3:13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

The Takeaway

Grace is God’s free gift of kindness, and we get to pass it on. This week, when someone annoys you or makes a mistake, ask, “How can I give them the grace God gave me?” Then choose to forgive instead of staying mad.

Discuss and Dive Deeper

Talk about it:

  1. Read “The Takeaway” above together. What’s one thing you learned?
  2. What’s the best surprise gift or treat you’ve ever gotten?
  3. Read Ephesians 2:8-9 together. How does it say we are saved?
  4. Parents, share a time you made a big mistake as a kid and got grace instead of anger.
  5. Why is it hard to show grace to a friend or sibling who is mean or breaks your things? How can Jesus help you forgive?
  6. What is one way your family can show grace to each other at home when someone makes a mistake this week?
  7. Take turns praying, thanking God for his grace and asking him to help you pass it on.
