Imagine eating a giant ice cream sundae for every meal. Sounds amazing, right? But after a while you’d have a stomachache, and it wouldn’t be fun anymore. Lots of people think God’s main goal is to make us happy all the time. God never said that! He wants to give us something even better than happy feelings: joy that lasts.

Chasing Happy Feelings

When we chase whatever feels good right now, we usually end up in trouble. We might break the rules, ignore our parents, or be selfish with our friends. Happy feelings come and go, and chasing them leaves us empty.

Delight in God

God offers something deeper. The Bible tells us where to find it.

Psalm 37:4 Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

To “delight” in God means to enjoy him more than anything else. When God is your favorite, he changes what you want, and he fills your heart with good things.

Joy That Lasts

Jesus said, “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete” (John 15:11). His joy doesn’t disappear on hard days. You find it by putting Jesus first in everyday choices, like telling the truth, obeying your parents, and showing love.

Psalm 16:11 You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.

The Takeaway

God gives joy that lasts when we delight in him. This week, when you’re tempted to be selfish for a quick good feeling, do a checkup: “Is this just quick fun, or does it honor God?” Then choose God, even when it’s hard.

Discuss and Dive Deeper

Talk about it:

  1. Read “The Takeaway” above together. What’s one thing you learned?
  2. If you could eat one food for a whole week, what would you pick?
  3. Read Psalm 37:4 together. What does it mean to “take delight in the LORD”?
  4. Parents, share a time you did something unwise because you thought it would make you happy. How did it turn out?
  5. Why is it hard to make a wise choice when the wrong choice looks more fun? How can Jesus help you stand firm?
  6. What is one thing your family can do this week to delight in God instead of chasing happy feelings?
  7. Take turns praying, asking God to be the biggest joy in each person’s heart.
