Proverbs 30 points to four small, unimpressive animals that are surprisingly wise. The ant teaches us to prepare for the future, including eternity. The hyrax shows us that real security is found in God. The locust reminds us of the power of community. And the lizard shows that lowly people can end up in a King’s palace through Jesus. These four wise animals in Proverbs make big truths easy to remember.
The Ant: Prepare for What’s Ahead
Most of the time, the Bible teaches wisdom through people’s stories. In one passage, though, God uses four obscure creatures that are small, not especially appealing and easy to overlook. Not many people keep pet ants, take a hyrax for a walk or play with locusts. Yet these animals carry lessons worth paying attention to:
Proverbs 30:24-28 “Four things on earth are small, yet they are extremely wise: Ants are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer; hyraxes are creatures of little power, yet they make their home in the crags; locusts have no king, yet they advance together in ranks; a lizard can be caught with the hand, yet it is found in kings’ palaces.
Ants don’t look formidable, but they’re remarkably wise. They understand winter is coming, so they use today to prepare for tomorrow. That raises a question for each of us: are you ready for the future, including eternity? Wise people don’t assume there will always be more time. The Hyrax: Find Your Security in God
The hyrax, sometimes called a rock badger, is about the size of a rabbit, with a short muzzle, small round ears and no tail. It’s hardly a majestic animal. To survive in a hostile environment full of predators, hyraxes make their homes in rocky cliffs, where they can quickly duck into cracks and crevices for protection.
The lesson is simple but powerful: wise people know where their safety comes from. David, who spent years hiding from enemies in rugged terrain, described God this way:
Psalm 18:2 The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
When life feels scary or overwhelming, where do you run first? Money, relationships and achievements can all feel like safe places, but they can crumble. The only real security in this life is found in God himself.
The Locust: You Need Community
A single grasshopper isn’t much of a threat. But when locusts gather by the thousands, they can strip a region bare. Ancient people feared locust swarms more than fire or storms, because those tiny insects could destroy a whole year’s food. Their strength is never in one locust. It’s in the community.
The same is true for God’s people. Christians aren’t meant to follow Jesus alone. You need other believers, and they need you. The Bible urges us to keep showing up for one another:
Hebrews 10:24-25 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
A community of believers pulling in the same direction can do amazing things. If you’ve been trying to go it alone, the wisdom of the locust invites you to find a church family or small group where you can give and receive encouragement.
The Lizard: Lowly Things Can End Up in High Places
The lizard is an ordinary creature with no special skill. Some are so small and slow you can catch them with your hand. Yet somehow they end up living in kings’ palaces. That’s a beautiful picture of what God does for his people. Throughout history, they were often easy to capture, oppress and enslave.
But through Jesus, those who seemed lowly are welcomed into the presence of the King. Because Christ died and rose again, everyone who trusts him is given a place in God’s family:
Ephesians 2:6-7 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.
Even if you feel small or overlooked today, God sees you. One day his people will enjoy all the riches of his kingdom and live with him forever.
The Takeaway
The four wise animals in Proverbs teach us to prepare for eternity like the ant, find security in God like the hyrax, stay connected to community like the locust and trust that God lifts lowly people into his palace, like the lizard.
