During a game of tag, you accidentally knock your friend down. They scrape their knee and drop their favorite toy. If you mumble “sorry” while you keep running, does that fix it? Not really. Everyone makes mistakes and hurts people sometimes. God wants us to learn how to say sorry and really mean it.
Sorry Matters to God
Saying sorry isn’t just good manners. It matters to God. Jesus said making things right with someone is so important that we should do it before we even bring our gifts to God (Matthew 5:23-24). When you admit you were wrong, you show that you care about the other person more than your pride.
Colossians 3:13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.
How to Give a Real Apology
A real apology takes a little time. Here’s how to do it:
- Slow down and look the person in the eye.
- Say exactly what you did wrong. “I’m sorry I knocked you down.”
- Don’t make excuses. Take responsibility.
- Ask for forgiveness. “Will you forgive me?”
- Help fix it. Help them up, find the toy, or make it right.
Don’t Hide It
The Bible says, “Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy” (Proverbs 28:13). When we own our mistakes, friendships can heal. And we get to show others the same grace Jesus shows us.
The Takeaway
A real apology owns the mistake and tries to make it right. This week, when you mess up, do an apology check: “Am I just trying to stay out of trouble, or do I really want to make this right?” Then own it, ask for forgiveness, and help fix it.
