Has someone ever called you a mean name at recess or made fun of your favorite shirt? People say, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” But that’s not true, is it? Words can hurt a lot. They can also help a lot. God wants us to use our words like medicine, not poison.

Words Are Powerful

The Bible says our words can bring life or death.

Proverbs 18:21 The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

A kind word can make someone’s whole day. A mean word can stick with them for years.

Words Show What’s in Your Heart

Jesus said that “the mouth speaks what the heart is full of” (Luke 6:45). When our hearts are full of anger, poisonous words come out. When our hearts are full of God’s love, kind words come out. That’s why we ask Jesus to change our hearts, not just our mouths.

Build People Up

God gives us a simple test for our words.

Ephesians 4:29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Before you speak, ask, “Will this help or hurt?” When you’re upset, slow down and choose gentle words, because “a gentle answer turns away wrath” (Proverbs 15:1). Use your voice to give compliments, cheer people on, and say sorry when you’re wrong.

The Takeaway

Your words can bring life or hurt. This week, give your words a safety test before you speak: “Will this help or hurt?” When you’re angry, stay calm, choose gentle words, and ask Jesus to help you control your tongue.

Discuss and Dive Deeper

Talk about it:

  1. Read “The Takeaway” above together. What’s one thing you learned?
  2. If you had a remote that could mute any silly or noisy sound in the world for an hour, what would you mute first?
  3. Read Proverbs 18:21 together. What kind of power does it say our words have?
  4. Parents, share a time someone said something encouraging to you when you were a kid. How did it make you feel?
  5. Why is it so easy to let poisonous words slip out when you’re upset with a sibling or friend? How can Jesus help you pause before you speak?
  6. What compliment or encouraging phrase can your family practice saying to each other every day this week?
  7. Take turns praying, asking Jesus to help each person use their words to build others up.
