Imagine coming in from recess on a hot day, super thirsty. Someone hands you a glass of water, but there’s a tiny drop of poison in it. Would you drink it? No way! Some thoughts are like that drop of poison. Thoughts like “Nobody likes me” or “I need to get back at them” can hurt you from the inside. God wants to help you stop poisonous thoughts before they spread.

Your Thoughts Matter

You have thousands of thoughts every day. Most of them are fine. But some are untrue or unkind. God cares about your thoughts because they shape how you feel, what you say, and how you treat others.

Proverbs 4:23 Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

Take Your Thoughts Captive

The Bible tells us what to do with poisonous thoughts.

2 Corinthians 10:5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

Taking a thought captive is like being a guard at the gate of your mind. When a thought tries to get in, stop it and inspect it. Ask, “Is this true? Is it loving? Is it helpful?” If not, don’t let it in.

Replace the Lie With the Truth

When you throw out a poisonous thought, put something true in its place. Remember what Jesus says about you: you are loved, you are chosen, and you were made to do good things (Ephesians 2:10). The Bible says to think about whatever is true, right, and lovely (Philippians 4:8). It takes practice, but Jesus will help you.

The Takeaway

Don’t drink poisonous thoughts. This week, guard the gate of your mind. When a thought shows up, ask, “Is it true, loving, and helpful?” If it’s poisonous, throw it out and replace it with what Jesus says about you.

Discuss and Dive Deeper

Talk about it:

  1. Read “The Takeaway” above together. What’s one thing you learned?
  2. If you invented a mind-reading hat, what color would it be, and what sound would it make when it caught a bad thought?
  3. Read 2 Corinthians 10:5 together. What does it say to do with our thoughts?
  4. Parents, share a negative or untrue thought you struggled with as a kid. How did you learn to deal with it?
  5. Why is it hard to stop angry or jealous thoughts when a classmate or sibling gets something you wanted? How can Jesus help?
  6. What Bible promise can your family memorize and say out loud this week when a poisonous thought shows up?
  7. Take turns praying, asking Jesus to help each person guard their thoughts.
