Nobody likes being told they’re wrong. But Proverbs 9 says how you react to correction shows whether you’re wise or foolish. The chapter describes two women, Wisdom and Folly, and each one invites you to her house.

Two Invitations

Wisdom and Folly both call out to people walking by. They even say almost the same words! The difference is where they lead. Wisdom leads to life. Folly leads to trouble. Every day, we choose which invitation to accept.

Wise People Can Take a Rebuke

Proverbs 9:8-9 Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you; rebuke the wise and they will love you. Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning.

A mocker gets mad when someone corrects him. A wise person says thanks and gets better. When your dad, coach, or teacher corrects you, it’s a chance to grow.

Where Good Judgment Comes From

Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

Good judgment means knowing the right thing to do. It starts with knowing God and respecting what he says.

The Takeaway

How you respond to correction shows who you are. Wise young men listen, learn, and get better. Foolish ones get angry and stay the same.
