If you follow Jesus, everything that’s true of him spiritually is now true of you: his perfect access to God, his right standing and his blamelessness before the Father. The Bible calls this being “in Christ.” It doesn’t mean you become God or never mess up. It means God sees you through Jesus, so you can stop living like a spiritual beggar and start living like the loved, forgiven child you already are.
You’re Richer Than You Think
Imagine someone deposited a fortune into your bank account, but you never checked your balance. You’d keep scraping together change for lunch and stressing about the price of a phone case, when you could have been living free the whole time. That’s how a lot of Christians live. We’re spiritually rich, but we never cash in on what we’ve been given.
Ephesians 1:3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.
Look at the word “every.” Not some blessings, and not just the ones you earn by keeping a perfect Bible-reading streak. Every spiritual blessing is already yours because you belong to Jesus. Forgiveness, God’s presence, the Holy Spirit’s help, a forever family and a future with God aren’t prizes you’re working toward. They’re gifts you’ve already received.
What It Means to Be in Christ
The Bible uses the little phrase “in Christ” again and again. It describes the connection that happens when you put your trust in Jesus. You’re joined to him, kind of like a branch connected to a vine. What flows through him starts flowing through you. That’s why it’s fair to say that what’s true of Jesus is true of you.
Think about Jesus’s relationship with the Father. He has perfect access to God. He’s completely righteous, which means totally right with God. He’s blameless. None of that is true of us on our own, and honestly, we all know it. But at the cross, Jesus made a trade that changes everything.
2 Corinthians 5:21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Jesus took your sin, and you get his righteousness. You didn’t earn it, and you don’t lose it by having a bad week. When God looks at you, he sees the perfect record of his Son. Living Free from Guilt and Shame
So why do so many Christians still feel like failures? Often it’s because we forget who we are. When you blow it, maybe by saying something cruel in a group chat or giving in to the same temptation again, guilt whispers that God is done with you. That voice can sound convincing, but it isn’t telling you the truth.
Romans 8:1-2 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.
No condemnation means God isn’t holding your sin over your head. That doesn’t mean sin doesn’t matter. It means you can run to God instead of hiding from him. Confess it, receive his forgiveness and get back up. Sin doesn’t get the final word, and you’re free to say no to it because the Spirit who gives life lives in you.
When you start believing what’s true of you in Christ, it changes how you handle pressure at school, comparison on social media and drama with friends. You don’t need everyone’s approval when you already have God’s. You can take risks to love people well because your identity is secure in him.
