Have you ever worked hard on a block tower or a drawing, and then in one second it was ruined? That’s kind of what happened to God’s perfect world. God made everything good, but people chose to disobey him and go their own way. The Bible calls that sin, and it messed everything up.

A Perfect World Broken

God gave Adam and Eve a beautiful garden and only one rule. But they listened to the wrong voice and broke God’s rule (Genesis 3). Their choice broke their friendship with God, and it brought pain, sadness, and death into the world.

Isaiah 53:6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Sheep are famous for wandering off where they shouldn’t go. People are like that too. Every one of us has chosen our own way instead of God’s way.

We Can’t Fix It Ourselves

All through the Old Testament, people tried to fix the problem on their own. Even great kings like David made big mistakes. Sin still shows up today when we lie to stay out of trouble, ignore our parents, or leave someone out at recess.

Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

No matter how hard we try, we can’t erase our sin by being extra good. We need someone to rescue us. But here’s the good news: Isaiah 53:6 says God would place our sin on someone else. That someone is Jesus!

The Takeaway

Everyone has sinned, and no one can fix it alone. This week, when you mess up, don’t hide it or try to fix it by yourself. Go to Jesus, tell him the truth, and ask him to help you make wise choices (1 John 1:9).

Discuss and Dive Deeper

Talk about it:

  1. Read “The Takeaway” above together. What’s one thing you learned?
  2. What’s the messiest room or project you’ve ever made? How long did it take to clean up?
  3. Read Isaiah 53:6 together. What animal does it compare us to, and why?
  4. Parents, share a time you chose your own way instead of listening to your parents. What happened?
  5. Why is it hard to admit a mistake right away at school, in sports, or with a brother or sister? How can Jesus help you be honest?
  6. What is one way your family can stop and ask God for help before making a hard decision this week?
  7. Take turns praying, telling God you’re sorry for going your own way and thanking him for sending Jesus.
