Have you ever dumped out a giant pile of LEGO bricks and built a whole city? God did something even more amazing. Before anything existed, God created the heavens and the earth out of nothing. The Bible is one big true story, and it starts with a God who makes beautiful things on purpose, including you.

In the Beginning

Before the world began, there was only darkness and emptiness. Then God spoke, and everything changed.

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. He made the oceans and the land, the sun and the stars, the fish, the birds, and every kind of animal. Every sunset, every tree, and every puppy is God’s artwork.

God’s Greatest Creation

At the very end, God made his most special creation: people.

Genesis 1:27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

Being made “in God’s image” means you were made to know God and to show his love to others. No one else in the world is exactly like you. Even your thumbprint is one of a kind! The Bible says, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14).

The Takeaway

God created the whole world, and he made you on purpose. This week, when you feel lonely or unsure, look at your thumbprint and remember that God designed you. Each morning, thank God for making you, and use your words and hands to show his love.

Discuss and Dive Deeper

Talk about it:

  1. Read “The Takeaway” above together. What’s one thing you learned?
  2. If you could invent a brand-new animal, what would it look like, and what could it do?
  3. Read Genesis 1:1 together. Where is this verse found, and what does it tell us about God?
  4. Parents, what did you love to build or create when you were a kid? How did you feel when you finished?
  5. How can knowing that God made you on purpose help you on a hard day at school or when you feel left out?
  6. What is one way your family can explore God’s creation outside together this week?
  7. Take turns praying, thanking God for something he made and for making each person in your family.
