Have you ever been with friends who were doing something you knew was wrong? It can feel scary to say no, especially when everyone else is going along. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego faced a choice like that, but their crowd was a whole kingdom, and saying no could have cost them their lives.
Everyone Else Bowed
King Nebuchadnezzar built a giant golden statue. Then he commanded everyone to bow down and worship it whenever the music played. Anyone who refused would be thrown into a blazing furnace! The music started, and everyone bowed, except three friends who loved God.
Daniel 3:17-18 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.
They trusted God no matter what happened.
God Was in the Fire
The angry king made the furnace seven times hotter and had the three friends thrown in. But when he looked inside, he couldn’t believe his eyes.
Daniel 3:25 He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.”
God was right there with them! When they came out, their hair wasn’t burned, and they didn’t even smell like smoke. Even the king praised their God.
Please God, Not the Crowd
You probably won’t face a fiery furnace, but you will face pressure to go along with the crowd. Paul asked, “Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God?” (Galatians 1:10). Fitting in feels good for a moment, but standing up for Jesus lasts forever. And just like those three friends, you never stand alone, because God is with you (Joshua 1:9).
The Takeaway
Stand up for Jesus, even when everyone else goes along with the crowd, because God is with you. This week, when you feel pressure from friends, ask yourself, “Am I trying to please God or my friends?”
