Atheism is the belief that God does not exist. Some atheists simply lack belief in God, while others firmly claim there is no God at all. The Bible doesn’t treat atheism as a neutral position. It teaches that God has made himself known through creation, that unbelief is ultimately a matter of the heart and that Christians should respond to atheists with both truth and gentleness.
Two Kinds of Atheism
When people hear the word atheism, they usually think of naturalistic atheism. That’s the belief that nothing exists beyond the natural world: no God, no soul, no spiritual realm. Everything can be explained by matter, energy and time. This view has become more common in Western culture, especially among people who see science and faith as enemies.
There is also religious atheism. Some spiritual traditions, like certain forms of Buddhism and Jainism, practice meditation, morality and ritual without belief in a personal Creator God. Atheism is also different from agnosticism. An agnostic says, “I don’t know if God exists,” while an atheist says, “God doesn’t exist.”
Creation Points to a Creator
The Bible says God hasn’t hidden himself. The universe had a beginning, it’s finely tuned for life and it’s full of order, beauty and information. Paul argued that creation itself is a clear witness to God’s power.
Romans 1:19-20 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.
Creation doesn’t tell us everything about God, but it tells us enough to know he’s there. That’s why so many people, even without a Bible, sense that someone is behind it all.
Unbelief Is a Heart Issue
The Bible’s verdict on atheism is blunt.
Psalm 14:1 The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good.
In the Bible, a “fool” isn’t someone with a low IQ. It’s someone who lives as if God doesn’t matter. Notice that the fool says this “in his heart.” For many people, rejecting God isn’t only an intellectual decision. It’s also a desire to be free from any moral authority above us. Of course, Christians can live like practical atheists too, believing in God on Sunday while ignoring him the rest of the week.
Respond With Gentleness and Respect
Many atheists have thought carefully about their beliefs, and some have been hurt by religious people. Arguments alone rarely change someone’s mind. Patience, good questions and genuine friendship go a long way.
