Yes, you can really know God. He isn’t hiding or playing hard to get. The Bible says God made you in his image, designed you for a relationship with him, and has been pursuing you since before you were born. If you’re asking whether you can really know God, that question itself may be a sign he’s already drawing you toward him. Your part is to take the next step and seek him.
Can I Trust What the Bible Says About God?
Before you take the Bible’s word about God, it’s fair to ask whether the Bible itself is trustworthy. That’s a good question, not a faithless one. The Bible is the best-preserved book from the ancient world. When the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered, they showed that the Old Testament had been copied with remarkable accuracy for more than a thousand years.
The Bible also holds together in a way that’s hard to explain by chance. It was written by about 40 authors over roughly 1,500 years, yet it tells one unified story that points to Jesus. Jesus himself said the whole thing was about him:
John 5:39-40 You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.
Then there’s the personal evidence. Peter denied Jesus, Thomas doubted him, and Paul hunted down his followers. Each of them was radically changed after meeting the risen Jesus. Something real happened to them, and the same God still changes lives today. If you want to dig deeper, check out Is the Bible Reliable?
You Were Made to Know Him
The Bible’s very first chapter tells you something huge about yourself: you were made in God’s image. That means every person carries a value and dignity that no grade, follower count or friend group can give or take away.
Genesis 1:27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
Being made in God’s image also explains why racism, bullying and violence feel so wrong to us. They attack something God stamped into every human being. And it means you were built for a connection with your Creator. God also gave you the freedom to choose, because love can’t be forced. When Jesus summed up the whole point of life, he talked about relationships:
Matthew 22:37-40 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
Following God isn’t mainly about rules or religion. It’s about loving him, loving people and seeing yourself the way he sees you.
God Is for You, Not Against You
A lot of people picture God as an angry referee waiting to blow the whistle on every mistake. Jesus showed us something very different. When a man with leprosy, someone everyone else avoided, asked Jesus for help, Jesus reached out, touched him and said, “I am willing.” God is willing to meet you right where you are.
Jesus also made it clear that he came to give you a better life, not a smaller one:
John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
That full life isn’t only about heaven someday. It starts now, as you learn to trust Jesus, honor God with your choices and help others pursue him too.
God Is Already Pursuing You
Here’s the best part: you’re not the one who started this. God knew you and loved you before you took your first breath. He has been pursuing your heart since day one.
Psalm 139:16 Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
God doesn’t ask you to climb up to him. He has already come close, and he makes a simple promise to anyone who responds: “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13). The real question isn’t whether God wants to be known. It’s whether you’re ready to take your next step toward him.
The Takeaway
Can I really know God? Yes. The Bible is trustworthy, you were made in God’s image for a relationship with him, and he is already pursuing you. When you seek him with all your heart, he promises you’ll find him.
