The Bible teaches that God created everything that exists, and he did it from nothing. He made the heavens and the earth, angels and animals, and he created human beings in a special, personal way in his own image. He even created time itself, yet he isn’t bound by it. Christians may debate the details of how and when, but these core truths about creation are essential to the Christian faith.
God Created Everything From Nothing
Theologians use a Latin phrase for the first truth: creation “ex nihilo,” which means “out of nothing.” Before creation, God existed on his own. There was no matter, no space, and no time. God didn’t take some preexisting material and shape it like a sculptor. He simply spoke, and things that didn’t exist came into being.
Genesis 1:1-2 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
Why does this matter? Because it sets God apart from everything else. Many ancient religions imagined gods who were part of nature or who formed the world out of chaos that was already there. The Bible says only God is eternal and self-existent. Everything else depends on him. Hebrews puts it this way: the universe was formed at God’s command, so what is seen was not made out of what was visible (Hebrews 11:3).
This also means God doesn’t need anything from us. He didn’t create because he was lonely or lacking. He created out of the overflow of his goodness and love.
God Made All Things, Seen and Unseen
The second nonnegotiable is that God created everything, not just the physical world. That includes animals and plants, stars and oceans, and also angels and other heavenly beings. Nothing exists that God didn’t make. Paul makes this point when describing Jesus’ role in creation.
Colossians 1:16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.
Notice how complete this is: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, thrones, powers, rulers, and authorities. Even spiritual beings who rebelled against God, like Satan and the demons, were originally created by him. They aren’t equal and opposite forces. That gives us confidence. Whatever spiritual battles we face, nothing is outside God’s authority.
This verse also tells us that creation was the work of the whole Trinity. Jesus, the eternal Son, was there at the beginning, and all things were created through him and for him.
God Created Humans in His Image
Third, the Bible tells us God created Adam and Eve in a special, personal way. Everything else in creation came from God’s spoken word, but when it came to people, Genesis slows down and describes something unique.
Genesis 1:26-27 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
Being made in God’s image means we reflect something of who he is. We can think, create, love, make moral choices, and have a relationship with our Creator. That gives every human being dignity and worth, regardless of age, ability, ethnicity, or status. It also means we’re accountable to the one who made us. God Created Time but Isn’t Bound by It
The fourth truth stretches our minds. God created time itself. Before the universe began, there was no “before” in the way we experience it. God isn’t limited by the ticking of a clock the way we are. He sees the beginning and the end at once.
Psalm 90:2 Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
This reveals God’s eternal nature. He has no beginning and no end, and he never runs out of time. For us, that’s a huge comfort. The God who stands outside of time also steps into our lives within time. He knows our past, holds our future, and is present with us right now. We can trust him with every season of life because he is never caught off guard.
