Men need God and accountability to stay pure because no one wins the battle for purity alone or by willpower. Storms of temptation are inevitable, and the question is how prepared you’ll be when they hit. Regular connection with God through Scripture and prayer equips you, the Holy Spirit gives you power you don’t have on your own, and trusted brothers in Christ help carry you through.

Storms Are Coming

Hurricanes can devastate entire communities, and spiritual storms can do the same to a man’s integrity and family. The question isn’t if storms will come but whether you’ll be ready. This lesson focuses on two critical preparations: connecting regularly with God and involving others through accountability.

Connect Regularly with God

Spiritual disciplines like Bible reading and prayer aren’t boxes to check. They prepare your heart and mind for the battles you face every day.

The role of Scripture. God’s Word is the foundation for spiritual strength.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Scripture isn’t just information. It’s transformation. Regular time in the Bible changes you from the inside out and reshapes your desires.

Psalm 119:9-11 How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

Many men struggle to read the Bible consistently because of guilt, confusion, spiritual opposition, or simply not making it a priority. But just as a husband chooses to love his wife every day, you can choose to engage with God’s Word and grow a deeper love for him. (See our resources on spiritual disciplines.)

The power of prayer. Prayer deepens your relationship with God as your Father and reminds you that you depend on him. Whatever your earthly father was like, God is the perfect Father: just, compassionate, and deeply loving. Prayer helps you surrender control and remember that he is God and you are not.

Walk in the Spirit, Not the Flesh

Victory in the battle for purity can’t be won by trying harder. Paul confronted believers who started with the Spirit but tried to finish on their own.

Galatians 3:2-3 I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by believing what you heard? Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?

There’s a difference between trying and training. Trying depends on willpower in the moment. Training builds habits that put you in the Spirit’s path day after day. When you walk by the Spirit, your desires begin to change, and he gives you strength that discipline alone can’t provide (Galatians 5:16).

Involve Others: The Power of Accountability

Isolation is dangerous. The enemy thrives when men battle alone. You need authentic relationships with trusted believers who will encourage you, challenge you, and pray for you.

Galatians 6:1-2 Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

Real accountability requires honesty. Invite a few trusted men to ask you tough questions and check in regularly. Trust usually starts small, but it grows stronger through consistent vulnerability, encouragement, and prayer. Purity isn’t a solo effort. It’s a team effort. Next, we’ll look at how to control your thoughts and eyes.

This lesson is part of the Stormproof series, based on Roger Fankhauser’s book Stormproof Men: Sexual Purity in a Sex-Saturated World.

The Takeaway

Storms of temptation are coming, so prepare now. Connect with God daily through Scripture and prayer, depend on the Holy Spirit instead of willpower, and invite trusted men into your battle. Isolation makes you vulnerable, but connection with God and others makes you strong.

Discuss and Dive Deeper

Talk about it:

  1. Read “The Takeaway” above as a group. What are your initial thoughts about the article?
  2. Who’s someone who has been a good friend to you over a long period of time? What makes that friendship work?
  3. How has regular Bible reading and prayer affected your pursuit of sexual purity, or how could it?
  4. What obstacles have kept you from consistent spiritual disciplines, and what support would help you overcome them?
  5. Read Galatians 3:2-3. Why is it important to distinguish between “training” and “trying” in spiritual growth?
  6. Read Galatians 6:1-2. Share about a time when accountability with another believer made a difference in your life.
  7. What specific step will you take this week to deepen your connection with God and build stronger accountability?
