A Proverbs 31 woman is a woman who fears the Lord and lets that devotion shape how she loves, works, and speaks. For many women, Proverbs 31 feels more like a guilt trip than an encouragement, a picture of someone who does everything perfectly. But this poem isn’t a checklist for superwomen. It’s a portrait of godly character, and its five traits are within reach for every woman, whether she’s single, married, a mom, or none of the above.

Not a Superwoman, a Godly Woman

Proverbs 31:10-31 is an acrostic poem in Hebrew: each verse begins with the next letter of the alphabet. It’s a celebration of wisdom lived out, the “A to Z” of a woman of noble character.

Proverbs 31:10 A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.

It’s easy to read this chapter and feel exhausted. She gets up before dawn, runs a household, buys a field, plants a vineyard, makes clothes, and helps the poor. But the point isn’t that you need to do all of it, all the time. The poem describes a life over many seasons, and it points to the character underneath the activity. Here are five traits of a godly woman.

1. Devoted

Proverbs 31:30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.

The poem ends with the key to everything: she fears the Lord. Our culture puts a lot of pressure on women to be charming and beautiful, but both fade. A godly woman makes God her top priority. Notice that she also plans her day (Proverbs 31:15). Starting your day with God, even for a few minutes, changes the way the rest of the day goes. Without a plan, it’s easy for urgent things to crowd out the important.

2. Trustworthy

Proverbs 31:11-12 Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.

Her husband can trust that she handles family matters honorably. But trustworthiness isn’t only for wives. Every woman can be someone whose friends, family, coworkers, and church can count on her. That means keeping your word, managing money honestly, showing up on time, and keeping confidences. Trust is built in small, everyday choices.

3. Courageous

Proverbs 31:25 She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.

She doesn’t fear the future, and she isn’t afraid to stand for her convictions. Many women carry fears about their kids, their health, their finances, their relationships, or growing older alone. A godly woman can laugh at the days to come, not because she knows what’s coming, but because she knows who holds it. Courage grows as we replace our fears with trust in God.

4. Encouraging

Proverbs 31:26 She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.

Her words bring life, not death. She’s loving and kind. It can be easy to slip into a critical mode, especially with the people we’re closest to: a husband, kids, roommates, or coworkers. A godly woman chooses to affirm. She notices what’s good in others and says so. She uses her influence to point people toward God.

5. Hard-Working

Proverbs 31:27 She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.

A godly woman isn’t lazy or idle. She’s diligent in what God has given her to do, whether that’s a career, a home, a ministry, or all three. That doesn’t mean she never rests; God designed us for rest too. But she’s intentional with her time. Each of us has things that drain our productivity, like endless scrolling, binge-watching, or procrastinating. Small adjustments can free up time and energy for what matters most.

The Takeaway

The Proverbs 31 woman isn’t a superwoman. She’s a godly woman marked by five traits: devoted, trustworthy, courageous, encouraging, and hard-working. Every woman can grow in these traits, starting with the one that matters most: a heart that fears the Lord.
