For women, trusting God with all your heart means relying on his wisdom and character more than your own plans, feelings, or worries. Proverbs 3:5-6 is one of the most quoted passages in the Bible, but living it out is harder than memorizing it. It calls us to trust God completely, admit the limits of our own understanding, and seek his direction in every part of life.
Why Trust Feels So Hard
When something scary happens, what’s your first reaction? Some women spring into action and start fixing. Others replay worst-case scenarios at 2 a.m. Some worry about what everyone will think. Many of us carry the mental load for our families, and letting go of control can feel irresponsible.
We also know that trust has to be earned. You trust the friend who has kept your secrets and shown up when it mattered. That’s why trusting God starts with knowing who he is.
Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
Trust Starts With Who God Is
Notice the word “all.” Not most of your heart, or the parts you’re comfortable handing over. All of it. That kind of trust only makes sense when you see how trustworthy God is.
Romans 11:33 Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!
God is infinite, all-powerful, all-wise, and all-loving. He never runs out of answers, energy, or patience. It also helps to look back. Think about the times God has already provided for you: the job that came through, the friend who showed up, the strength you didn’t know you had in a hard season. Remembering his faithfulness in the past builds trust for whatever you’re facing now.
Don’t Lean on Your Own Understanding
The second half of Proverbs 3:5 is where things get personal. We’re told not to lean on our own understanding. That’s not because your mind doesn’t matter. It’s because it’s limited.
Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?
Our feelings, fears, and assumptions can deceive us. Insecurity tells us we’re not enough. Comparison tells us someone else has it better. Anxiety tells us the worst will surely happen. Our culture often tells women to “follow your heart,” but the Bible is honest that our hearts can lead us the wrong way. We see only a sliver of the picture. God sees all of it.
Seek His Way in Everything
Proverbs 3:6 says “in all your ways submit to him.” That means bringing every area of life to God: relationships, finances, career, parenting, and the decisions that seem too small to pray about. So how do we seek his will? Through prayer, time in Scripture, and godly counsel from wise people who know him well.
Isaiah 55:8-9 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
When you’re facing a hard situation, this passage is a gift. It means God’s plan may look different from yours, but it’s better. You don’t have to understand everything to trust the One who does. Pray honestly, tell him what you’re afraid of, and ask him to show you the next step. Then listen for his answer in his Word and through the wise women and men he has placed around you.
The Takeaway
Trusting God with all your heart means relying on his character instead of your own limited understanding. Women can let go of control by remembering who God is, recognizing that our hearts can deceive us, and seeking his will through prayer, Scripture, and godly counsel. He will make your paths straight.
