Why should kids obey their parents? Because God gave you parents to guide you and keep you safe while you grow up. Maybe you’re in the middle of a game when Mom says it’s time to clean up, and you feel grumpy or pretend you didn’t hear. It’s easy to want to do things your own way. But God has a better plan.
Parents Are God’s Gift
God put your parents in charge for a reason. They can see dangers you can’t see yet, and they want what’s best for you. The Bible says this plainly.
Colossians 3:20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
When you obey your parents, you’re not just making them happy. You’re pleasing God. Obeying them is a way of showing that you trust him.
Even Jesus Obeyed
When Jesus was 12 years old, he stayed behind at the temple, and his parents had to search for him. Then the Bible tells us what he did next.
Luke 2:51 Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.
Jesus is God’s Son, and he still obeyed his parents. If Jesus did it, we can too.
Obey Cheerfully
Real obedience isn’t just doing what you’re told when you feel like it. It means listening the first time, without whining or arguing.
Philippians 2:14 Do everything without grumbling or arguing.
When everyone listens and helps, home becomes a happier, more peaceful place. And God promises that honoring your parents leads to good things (Ephesians 6:1-3).
The Takeaway
God gave you parents to guide you, and obeying them pleases him. This week, try the One-Second Rule: when your parents ask you to do something, take a breath, smile, and start moving within one second, without grumbling.
