Have you ever built a LEGO tower on a wobbly base? It looks great for a minute, and then it all comes crashing down. Life works the same way. When you put God first, your days, friendships, and choices are built on something solid that won’t fall apart.

Build on the Rock

Jesus told a story about two builders. One built his house on rock, and the other built on sand. When the storm came, only the house on the rock was still standing.

Matthew 7:24 Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

Putting God first means trusting that his way is the best way. You don’t have to be in charge of everything or figure everything out by yourself. God is strong enough to hold you up.

Seek God First

Jesus gave us a simple plan for every day.

Matthew 6:33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

“Seek” means look for or go after. When you go after God first, he promises to take care of the rest. You don’t have to worry about getting everything you need, because God already knows what you need.

What It Looks Like

Putting God first isn’t just for Sunday. It shows up in everyday choices:

  • Thank God as soon as you wake up.
  • Be kind to your brother or sister, even when they bug you.
  • Tell the truth, even when you might get in trouble.
  • Give your worries to God, like a big test at school.

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

The Takeaway

Put God first and your life will be built on a solid rock. This week, try the First-Minute Rule: as soon as you wake up, before you even get out of bed, pray and ask God to help you love him and love others that day.

Discuss and Dive Deeper

Talk about it:

  1. Read “The Takeaway” above together. What’s one thing you learned?
  2. If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
  3. Read Matthew 6:33 together. What does Jesus say to seek first, and what does he promise?
  4. When was a time you tried to fix a problem all by yourself instead of asking for help?
  5. Why is it sometimes hard to put God first when you really want your own way? How can Jesus help you choose his way?
  6. Parents, share one way you try to put God first in your day. Kids, what did you notice?
  7. What is one way your family can put God first together before you leave the house each morning this week?
