You overcome sexual temptation by understanding the battle you’re in and preparing for it before it comes. Becoming a Christian gives you the power to overcome sin, but it doesn’t remove temptation or your capacity to sin. The Bible says you’re a target, your struggle isn’t unique, and God always provides a way out. Victory comes through a plan that includes connecting with God, involving others, guarding your mind and eyes, and running when temptation hits.

Understanding the Battle

Every Christian experiences an internal conflict between the sinful nature (the flesh) and the desires of the Holy Spirit. That struggle shows up in every area of life, from relationships to money, but it’s especially intense when it comes to sexual purity.

Galatians 5:16-17 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.

Even the apostle Paul felt this tension. He wrote openly about his own frustration.

Romans 7:15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

But Paul didn’t stop there. He pointed to the only source of rescue.

Romans 7:24-25 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!

If you feel the pull of temptation, it doesn’t mean you aren’t a Christian. It means you’re in the fight every believer faces. And Jesus is the one who sets you free.

You Are a Target

You need to recognize that you’re a target. The enemy is looking for opportunities to derail your purity, and our culture offers endless ones through media, advertising, and casual interactions. Proverbs paints a vivid picture of how temptation calls out to us.

Proverbs 9:13-18 Folly is an unruly woman; she is simple and knows nothing. She sits at the door of her house, on a seat at the highest point of the city, calling out to those who pass by, who go straight on their way, “Let all who are simple come to my house!” To those who have no sense she says, “Stolen water is sweet; food eaten in secret is delicious!” But little do they know that the dead are there, that her guests are deep in the realm of the dead.

Temptation often finds us without any effort on our part. It promises something sweet, but it hides the cost. That’s why staying alert is essential.

Your Struggle Is Not Unique

Many men feel isolated, as if their temptation is uniquely difficult. That lie leads to excuses and defeat. Scripture tells a different story.

1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

Your struggle is common, and God is faithful. He promises to provide a way out every time. And Jesus understands exactly what you’re facing.

Hebrews 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.

You’re not alone, and you don’t have a Savior who looks down on you from a distance. Jesus faced real temptation and won, and he offers you his strength.

Strategies Beyond Just Fleeing

Fleeing temptation is essential, but it’s only one part of a healthy plan for purity. The strongest approach combines preparation before temptation comes with decisive action when it does:

  • Connect regularly with God. Build daily habits of prayer and Scripture reading that strengthen you spiritually. (See our resources on spiritual disciplines.)
  • Involve others. Share your struggles with trusted friends or mentors who will pray for you and ask you hard questions.
  • Control your thoughts. Purity begins in the mind. Replace destructive thoughts with biblical truth.
  • Control your eyes. Guard what you watch, and remove the sources that routinely lead you into temptation.
  • Flee immediately. When temptation hits, don’t hesitate. Get out of the situation.

Later lessons in this series unpack each of these strategies, starting with connecting with God and involving others.

This lesson is part of the Stormproof series, based on Roger Fankhauser’s book Stormproof Men: Sexual Purity in a Sex-Saturated World.

The Takeaway

Following Jesus doesn’t end temptation, but it gives you power to overcome it. Recognize the battle, stay alert because you’re a target, remember that God always provides a way out, and build a plan that prepares you before temptation hits. You’re not alone in this fight.

Discuss and Dive Deeper

Talk about it:

  1. Read “The Takeaway” above as a group. What are your initial thoughts about the article?
  2. What’s a small temptation you face almost every day, like a snack, your phone, or hitting snooze?
  3. Read Galatians 5:16-17. How does knowing that every believer faces this struggle affect the way you see your own battles with temptation?
  4. Why do you think men often underestimate the role accountability can play in sexual purity?
  5. Read 1 Corinthians 10:13. Describe a moment when God provided a way out of temptation. What helped you recognize it and act on it?
  6. Which strategy (connecting with God, involving others, controlling your thoughts or eyes, fleeing) most needs your attention right now?
  7. Read Hebrews 4:15. How does knowing Jesus faced temptation without sinning encourage you in your own battle?
