Catholics and Protestants have been fighting for over 500 years. So what's the difference, and what does the Bible say?

Talking Points:

  • Protestants believe in just the Bible – the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments. Catholics believe in the Bible plus the Apocrypha.
  • Protestants believe in the infallibility of Scripture. Catholics believe that the Pope is also infallible when speaking to matters of faith.
  • Protestants believe in the the priesthood of all believers, meaning any Christian can interpret scripture with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Catholics believe that the Church has ultimate authority when it comes to interpretation.
  • Protestants believe in salvation by faith alone. Catholics believe in salvation by faith plus works, such as baptism and penance. Ephesians 2:8-9
  • Protestants believe Christ’s work in atonement is enough. Catholics believe that purgatory might be needed to atone for earthly sins. Romans 3:24-25

  3. What is the church’s role when it comes to interpreting scripture? What is the individual’s role? What is the Spirit’s role?
  4. Read Ephesians 2:8-9. What does this say about salvation? Where do you believe “works” fit in?
  5. Explain the Catholic idea of purgatory. Do you believe this doctrine is biblical? Why or why not?
  6. Is there a step you need to take based on today’s topic?
