Five Latin phrases help us to understand the revolutionary ideas of the Protestant Reformation. Here they are, with scripture to back them up.
Talking Points:
- Sola Scriptura (Only Scripture). The Reformation brought about access for all to read the Bible for themselves instead of only through the priests. 2 Timothy 3:16-17
- Sola Fide (Only Faith). Catholics taught that you were saved through a combination of belief and works but the reformers pointed out Paul’s teachings in Ephesians to combat that idea. Ephesians 2:8-9
- Sola Gratia (Only Grace). The gift of salvation is through the grace of God, not the church or the pope. Romans 3:23-24
- Sola Christo (Christ Alone). The Reformation was a movement encouraging a personal relationship with Jesus aside from the church. Romans 5:1
- Sola Deo Gloria (God’s Glory). The life of faith is all about living for God, elevating His name above all else. Romans 11:34-36
