Being a doer of the word means simply reading what God says and obeying it. Fractured faith lets our own desires shape our views on things like dating, modesty, success, and social issues. Genuine faith lets God have the loudest voice. James warns that hearing God’s Word without doing it is self-deception, but obeying it leads to freedom, joy, and peace.
Who Has the Loudest Voice?
We all make decisions every day about relationships, money, how we dress, and what we believe about the issues of our time. The question is, what influences those decisions most? For many of us, it’s our feelings, our friends, or the culture around us. Fractured faith means our desires inform our views, and then we look for a Bible verse to back them up.
James calls us to something different.
James 1:21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.
Following Jesus means getting rid of the things that don’t honor him and humbly accepting what his Word says, even when it challenges what we want. For help thinking this through, read What Does It Mean to Think Biblically?
A Divided Heart Can’t Stand
James gives a vivid picture of what happens when we hear God’s Word but don’t obey it.
James 1:22-24 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.
Imagine looking in a mirror, noticing something on your face, and walking away without doing anything about it. That’s what it’s like to read the Bible without applying it. James says we’re only fooling ourselves. The double-minded are confused and easily deceived. If you’ve ever gone against God’s way and lost your peace, you know how true this is.
Why Does God Have Rules?
Think about the rules you set as a parent, an employee, or a homeowner. You make them to protect people and help things run well. When others ignore them, it communicates that they don’t trust you or respect you. God’s commands work the same way. He gives them because he loves us and knows what’s best. Our willingness to obey shows whether we really trust him.
Obedience Leads to Freedom
We often think of rules as restrictive. But James calls God’s Word “the perfect law that gives freedom.”
James 1:25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.
When we choose God’s way over our own desires, we find freedom from guilt, confusion, and the consequences of sin. Obedience is the path to lasting joy and peace.
Genuine Faith Is Practical
James doesn’t let us keep faith in the realm of ideas. He gives a practical example.
James 2:14-16 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?
Wishing someone well without helping them is empty. In the same way, saying we believe God’s Word without obeying it is empty. Genuine faith listens and acts. That starts with spending regular time in the Bible. If you want to grow in this, explore our resources on spiritual disciplines.
The Takeaway
Being a doer of the word means letting God’s Word, not our desires, have the loudest voice in our lives. Listening without obeying is self-deception, but obedience leads to freedom. Make a plan to read God’s Word regularly, and ask him to help you do what it says.
