The woman described in Proverbs 31 is marked by strength, compassion, wisdom, attentiveness, and servanthood. She isn’t a picture of a perfect woman who does everything flawlessly. She’s a portrait of godly character that any woman can grow into, whether she’s single or married, working outside the home or at home. Most of all, she is a woman who fears the Lord, and that’s the source of everything else.
Strength
Some people think being a godly woman means being weak, quiet, or timid. Proverbs 31 paints a very different picture. This woman “sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks” (Proverbs 31:17).
Proverbs 31:25 She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.
Her strength isn’t just physical. It’s spiritual. She can face the future with confidence because she has handed her fears over to God. Godly strength isn’t about having it all together. It’s about trusting the One who does.
Compassion
It’s easy for anyone to become focused inward, especially when we’re struggling with insecurity or the pressure to measure up. The woman of Proverbs 31 is secure enough to see the needs of the people around her.
Proverbs 31:20 She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.
Compassion means noticing someone’s pain and moving toward them to help. When a woman is free from the trap of constantly comparing herself to others, she has room in her heart to care for others.
Wisdom
Knowledge plus experience equals wisdom. The Proverbs 31 woman has learned from life, and she shares what she knows in a way that helps people.
Proverbs 31:26 She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
Notice that her wisdom comes with kindness. Truth spoken with condescension or harshness rarely helps anyone. Proverbs says, “Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones” (Proverbs 16:24). A godly woman uses her words to build others up.
Attentiveness
The woman in Proverbs 31 is tuned in to what’s happening around her. She runs a business, cares for her household, and plans ahead.
Proverbs 31:27 She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.
This doesn’t mean every woman must be a homemaker. Women can honor God in many callings. But women who choose to focus on their home and family should never feel “less than.” Whatever her role, a godly woman is attentive and works hard at what God has given her.
Servanthood
God’s Word affirms that men and women have different roles, especially in marriage. Submitting to godly leadership doesn’t diminish a woman’s strength or worth. It reflects the heart of Jesus, who came to serve.
Proverbs 31:11-12 Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.
Servanthood takes strength, not weakness. And biblical submission is never one-sided. Husbands are called to love their wives sacrificially, and wives to respect their husbands (Ephesians 5:33). In the end, Proverbs 31 tells us what matters most: “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised” (Proverbs 31:30).
The Takeaway
What are the five marks of a Proverbs 31 woman? Strength, compassion, wisdom, attentiveness, and servanthood. These qualities don’t come from trying harder to be perfect. They grow out of a heart that fears and trusts the Lord.
