When the Bible says God is one, it means there is only one true God, the Creator and Lord of all, and no other being shares his nature. This truth stands at the heart of both the Old and New Testaments. It doesn’t contradict the Trinity, because Christians believe the one God eternally exists as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, three persons sharing one divine being.
Israel’s Great Confession
The best place to begin understanding the Trinity is with the truth that God is one. It’s worth noting that the word “Trinity” never appears in the Bible. It’s a term Christians use to summarize what Scripture teaches about God, and the foundation of that teaching is crystal clear: there is only one God.
Deuteronomy 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.
These words, known as the Shema (from the Hebrew word for “hear”), became Israel’s daily confession of faith. Surrounded by nations that worshiped many gods, Israel was called to worship the LORD alone. Centuries later, when someone asked Jesus which commandment was most important, he began by quoting this very verse. Jesus didn’t set aside the oneness of God; he affirmed it.
There Is No Other God
The prophets repeated this truth again and again, especially when God’s people were tempted to chase idols. Through Isaiah, God declared that he alone is God, the beginning and the end of all things.
Isaiah 44:6 This is what the LORD says— Israel’s King and Redeemer, the LORD Almighty: I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God.
Just two verses later, God asks whether there is any God besides him and answers his own question: there is no other Rock. The Bible’s testimony is consistent from beginning to end. There aren’t many gods, lesser gods, or gods that humans can someday become. That rules out polytheism, and it rules out any belief system that treats the true God as one divine being among many. The one true God has no rivals and no equals.
One God in Three Persons
So how does the Trinity fit with God’s oneness? Christians don’t believe in three gods, and we don’t believe God simply wears three different masks at different times. The Bible presents the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit as distinct persons who are each fully God, and yet there is only one God.
2 Corinthians 13:14 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
Paul’s blessing names all three persons side by side as the source of grace, love, and fellowship. Jesus did the same when he told his followers to baptize in the name (singular) of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Trinity is a mystery our minds can’t fully comprehend, but it isn’t a contradiction. For a deeper look, see what the Trinity is and whether it’s biblical.
Why It Matters That God Is One
The oneness of God isn’t just a doctrine for theologians; it shapes how we see the world. There is only one Creator who made humanity, so every person bears his image and is accountable to him. There is only one Lord over the whole universe, so no nation, ruler, or idol deserves our ultimate loyalty. And there is one God over all of history, who has been carrying out one great plan of redemption from the very beginning.
Isaiah 45:22 Turn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other.
Because there is only one God, there is only one way of salvation. God invites people from every corner of the earth to turn to him, and he has opened that door through Jesus, who died for our sins and rose again. The Takeaway
When the Bible says God is one, it means there is only one true God, with no rivals and no equals. The Trinity doesn’t divide him; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are one God in three persons. Because he alone is God, he alone deserves our worship, our trust, and our whole hearts.
