Leaving Mormonism often brings a flood of hard emotions: fear, grief, anger, guilt and confusion. That’s normal, and it’s worth working through them honestly instead of stuffing them down. On the other side are better things: peace, joy, love and freedom in Christ. The key is to keep your eyes on Jesus, the reason you’re making this journey, and to surround yourself with people who will walk with you through the emotions of leaving Mormonism.
Why Leaving Hurts So Much
For many Latter-day Saints, the church isn’t just a religion. It’s family, culture, community and identity all rolled into one. Leaving can feel like losing a whole world. You may fear how your family will respond, grieve the loss of traditions and friendships, feel angry about things you were taught or carry guilt for questioning what you once believed.
Those feelings don’t mean you’re doing something wrong. They mean something important is at stake. God isn’t put off by your pain. He meets people right in the middle of it:
Psalm 34:18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
Bring your honest emotions to God in prayer. Write them down, talk them through and give yourself time. Healing rarely happens overnight.
What’s on the Other Side
As painful as the transition can be, many former Latter-day Saints describe a new sense of peace and freedom once they discover the biblical Jesus and the grace he offers. Instead of striving to be worthy, they learn to rest in what Jesus has already done.
John 8:32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
That freedom is real, but it usually comes gradually. Don’t try to process everything alone. Find a Bible-based church, a small group or a mentor who understands your journey and can help you work through questions and emotions as they come up.
Keep Your Eyes on Jesus
It’s possible to leave a church for the wrong reasons, like anger, rebellion or simply wanting to do whatever you want. The best reason to leave is to find and follow the Jesus of the Bible. That focus will carry you through the hard days:
Hebrews 12:1-3 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
This journey is a long-distance race, not a sprint. Jesus endured far more opposition than you will, and he did it for the joy of bringing people like you to God. Fix your eyes on him, and the journey will be worth it. If you’d like to learn more about putting your faith in Jesus, check out How can I become a Christian?
The Takeaway
The emotions of leaving Mormonism are real and often painful, but they’re worth working through. Bring them honestly to God, don’t go it alone and keep your eyes on Jesus, who offers peace, freedom and a new family in him.
