Easter is the most important holiday because it celebrates the day Jesus rose from the dead. Jesus came to fix our biggest problem, sin, by dying on the cross in our place. Three days later he came back to life, proving that even death can’t defeat him. Because of the resurrection, everyone who puts their faith in Jesus is forgiven and gets brand-new life with God.

Our Big Problem Is Sin

There are lots of fun holidays throughout the year. Maybe your favorite is Christmas, with presents and lights, or Thanksgiving, with a giant meal and family all around. Those are great days. But Easter is the most important holiday of them all, and to understand why, we first need to understand why Jesus had to die.

The Bible says our biggest problem is sin. Sin is going our own way instead of God’s way. It’s lying, being selfish, being unkind, or ignoring what God says is right. Everybody does it, kids and grown-ups alike, and sin breaks our relationship with God. Even worse, we can’t fix it on our own.

John 8:34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.

A slave isn’t free to do whatever they want. Jesus was saying that sin has a grip on us that we can’t break by trying harder. We need someone to set us free.

Jesus Came to Give Us Life

That’s exactly why Jesus came. Jesus is God, and he came to live among us so he could die for us and pay for our sin. When he died on the cross, he took the punishment we deserved. It was the greatest act of love the world has ever seen.

John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

Sin steals and destroys, but Jesus gives. He didn’t come just to make us a little better. He came to give us full, rich life with God, starting now and lasting forever.

Jesus Rose from the Dead

Here’s the amazing part. Jesus didn’t stay dead. Three days after he died on the cross, he rose again. The big word for this is resurrection. His friends saw him, talked with him, and even ate with him. This is what Easter is all about.

The resurrection proves Jesus has power over everything, even death. It shows that his payment for our sin worked. And it means we can have new life too. Because of Jesus, we have the power to say “no” to sin and “yes” to living in a way that honors God.

John 11:25-26 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

Jesus said these words to his friend Martha just before he raised her brother Lazarus from the dead. Then he asked her a question he still asks each of us today: Do you believe this?

Our Response Is Faith

So how do we get this new life? We can’t earn it by being good enough. Our simple response is faith, which means trusting Jesus and what he did for us. When we put our trust in him, our sins are forgiven and our relationship with God is made right.

Romans 3:22-24 This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

“Justified freely” means God declares us right with him as a free gift. Nobody is too young or too far gone to receive it. If you’d like to learn more about putting your faith in Jesus, check out How can I become a Christian?

The Takeaway

Easter is the most important holiday because Jesus rose from the dead. He died to pay for our sin, came back to life to prove his power over death, and now offers new life to everyone who trusts in him. That’s why Easter is worth celebrating every single year.
