If we want your kids to follow Jesus, then we need to spend time with them cultivating a trusting relationship centered on God's Word.

Key Points:

  • We are all leading our children somewhere. We need to ask ourselves, “What am I modeling for my children and what is my ultimate hope and goal for them?”
  • Discipling is about relationship, and relationships take time to establish, even with our kids.
  • All teens will encounter tough things, and we need to fight the urge to rescue them from those things. Instead, we should walk with them through those difficulties, helping them to discover the truth and pointing them to Jesus.
  • We need to have a discipleshio relationship that is “taste and see.” They need to see you living out your beliefs and the values you are teaching them. It should be an invitation to them to come and live a life following Christ and recognizing their identity as a child of God.

Quote This:

1 Peter 5:2-3Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.

Talk About It
  1. What is your initial reaction to this topic? What jumped out at you?
  2. Have you ever considered or thought about your ultimate goal for your children? How does that help you make decisions about your parenting right now?
  3. How often do you catch yourself modeling the very behaviors you don’t want to see in your kids? How do they typically respond to that hypocrisy?
  4. Why is it important to build a relationship with your kids if you want to also be their mentor?
  5. What are some ways you can spend time building a relationship with your teen?
  6. Do you ever find yourself “rescuing” your teen from something? Think of a time that your teen might have learned a bigger lesson from a difficult situation if you had let them go through it. How did you or could you have gone through it with them?
  7. Read 1 Peter 5:2-3. Do you agree that you are a shepherd of your kids? How can you better lead them toward a relationship with Jesus? What are you modeling for them in this area?
  8. Is there a step you need to take based on today’s topic?
