Every Believer Has A Ministry
One of the most practical results of the priesthood of all believers is that it changes how we view “ministry.” In a system with a specialized priesthood, ministry is something you watch the “professionals” do on a stage. But in the biblical model, every member of the body of Christ has been given spiritual gifts to serve others. You are a priest every time you pray for a friend, share the Gospel with a neighbor, or serve those in need.
This doctrine elevates the value of our daily lives. Whether you are raising children, running a business, or studying for exams, you are doing “priestly work” when you do it for the glory of God. We are called to “offer our bodies as a living sacrifice” (Romans 12:1), which means our entire life is an act of worship. There is no longer a divide between “sacred” and “secular” jobs; every believer is a full-time minister of the Gospel in their own sphere of influence.
The Responsibility Of The Priesthood
With this incredible privilege comes a significant responsibility. Being a priest means we are called to represent God to the world. Just as the Old Testament priests were tasked with “keeping” the sanctuary and teaching the Law, we are tasked with “keeping” the truth of the Gospel and sharing it with others. We are God’s ambassadors, his “living letters” to a world that is searching for hope.
This also means we have the responsibility to study the Scriptures for ourselves. We don’t have to rely on someone else to tell us what God says; we can engage with the Word of God directly, guided by the Holy Spirit. This doesn’t mean we ignore the wisdom of pastors and teachers, but it does mean we are “Bereans” (Acts 17:11) who check everything against the Bible to ensure it is true.
