Don’t love your money. That’s gross. Love God and be satisfied with what he has already given you.
Okay, let’s start by making a top five list. What are the top five things that you love? Is it…
- A phone
- A new puppy
- A favorite blankie
- A hat
What about your money? Does that make the list at all? We hear about that all the time, right? Money money money. But what’s the big deal about money?
Nobody loves actual money.
Think about it. Money is gross. It’s one of the dirtiest things on earth! Do you know how many fingers have touched that dollar bill? And did all of those people wash their hands before they touched this money? No way! Money is dirty. Nobody loves actual money.
So then why does everybody want it so much, especially grown-ups?
Some people love the stuff that money can buy.
Go back to your list. Chocolate cake, a phone, a new puppy, a favorite blankie, a hat. How do you get all these things? You have to buy them! And what do you buy them with? Money! That’s why people want money, even though it’s dirty.
You know what happens when you start loving stuff? You start wanting more of it. Then you want even more of it. Pretty soon, you just can’t get enough of it and you’ll never be satisfied. That’s why the Bible tells us not to love money or the stuff that money can buy. It’s just not worth it.
Hebrews 13:5 “Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have.”
Think about the stuff you have right now. Is it enough? Can you be happy with it? That doesn’t mean you’ll never get more stuff, but if you can be happy with what you have right now, then you’re doing great! If you get more stuff, fine. If you don’t get more stuff, that’s okay, too.
Be happy with what God already gave you.
Remember when we learned that our money comes from God? That means our stuff comes from him, too. So when we are happy with what we already have, it’s like we’re telling God that he did a good job. We have a thankful heart instead of a greedy heart. God loves a thankful heart!
So don’t love your money. That’s gross. Love God and be satisfied with what he has already given you.
