If you or a loved one is on a deathbed, questions about the afterlife are more real to you than ever. Here's what the Bible says about what's next.

Talking Points:

  • The Bible teaches that heaven is a real place. In heaven there’s no death or sorrow or pain. Revelation 21:4
  • The Bible teaches that death is not the end of existence. The moment you die, you can be in the presence of God. 2 Corinthians 5:8
  • These powerful promises are only available to those who are “saved”. Salvation is ours the moment we respond to Jesus in faith. Romans 10:9, Romans 3:22

A Sinner’s Prayer:

“Jesus, I recognize I’m a sinner. I know that you died on the cross and rose from the dead so that I could have life. I’m turning from my sin now, and I’m turning to you in faith. I trust in you alone to forgive my sin and give me new life. Thank you for this free gift. Amen.”

Discussion:
  1. Initial reactions to this topic? What jumped out at you?
  2. What were you taught about the afterlife when you were growing up?
  3. Read Revelation 21:4. What do you think heaven looks like? Where did you get your ideas about it?
  4. Read Romans 3:22. Is it hard to believe that the thief on the cross could be saved after living such a horrible life? What does it say about God that he would allow for a deathbed confession?
  5. Read Romans 10:9. Have you ever trusted Jesus for salvation? If so, when? If not, would you like to do it today?
  6. If you’re ready, pray the “Sinner’s Prayer” above with a friend or family member.
