Many would say we should fear the wrath of God, but his anger opens the way for grace.

Talking Points:

  • The idea of God’s wrath is not popular in today’s “non-judgmental” culture. Even many Christians would rather focus only on Jesus and the New Testament.
  • If God wasn’t wrathful, he couldn’t be gracious. God doesn’t show wrath because he hates us. God shows wrath because he hates sin. Galatians 5:16-17
  • When we understand how much God hates sin, we understand how much God loves us. He sent Jesus to die on our behalf despite our sin. Romans 5:8
  • Because of sin, wrath is what we deserve but grace is what we get. God showing kindness to us would be irrelevant if there were no consequences for sin.
Discussion:
  1. Initial reactions to this topic? What jumped out at you?
  2. Are there some Old Testament Bible stories that make you uncomfortable or seem confusing to you? Explain.
  3. Why do you think the doctrine of God’s wrath is so unpopular these days? Why does God hate sin?
  4. Read Galatians 5:16-17. Sin can be defined as going our own way instead of God’s way. How do you see our culture minimizing sin? How have you been guilty of doing this?
  5. Read Romans 6:23. What is the difference between the wages of sin and the gift of God? (Why is one a payment while the other is a gift?)
  6. Read Romans 5:8. “God showing kindness to us would be irrelevant if there were no consequences for sin.” Explain this statement. What does this verse say about God’s love for us?
  7. Moving forward, how will you explain the point of God’s wrath to a friend?
  8. Is there a step you need to take based on today’s topic?
