Mentoring can happen in the home, small group, team or one-on-one.

Talking Points:

  • Environment #1: The home. Parents are mentors to their children, intentionally transferring their values and consistently teaching the truth of God’s Word.
  • Environment #2: The Small group. Well-trained group leaders can model what it looks like to share the truth in love on a consistent basis, and those leaders can challenge group attenders to go home and do the same thing in their spheres of influence.
  • Environment #3: The Team. Ministry teams are a natural place for mentoring to happen in the local church, whether it be worship teams, ministry teams or elder boards
  • Environment #4: One on one. Not everyone will be a parent, lead a group or lead a team. But everyone can mentor someone one-on-one.

  2. In your own words, explain what “mentoring” is and how to use the PG tools to do it. Have you ever experienced it?
  3. What was your home environment growing up? Did your parents intentionally mentor you? How did they do it?
  4. What is the difference between small group mentoring and team mentoring? What are some topics you might cover in a team setting that you wouldn’t cover in a small group setting?
  5. Who mentored you – whether in faith, sports or business – and how did they do it?
  6. Which environment for mentoring seems most do-able for you? Is there someone you need to start mentoring? To get started, go through the Pursuit.
  7. Is there a step you need to take based on today’s topic?
