You’ve probably noticed that people sing at church a lot. On a Sunday, your church might sing between four and six songs. Your youth group might even sing a bunch of songs when you get everyone together. That’s a lot of singing. Let’s understand why we sing at church.

We sing because the Bible says so.

God commands his people to sing when they come together.

Psalm 150:1-6 Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heaven! Praise him for his mighty works…Praise him with a clash of cymbals; praise him with loud clanging cymbals. Let everything that breathes sing praises to the Lord!

There are many psalms that talk about praising God. Theses psalms are telling us that when we get together at church or some other setting we are supposed to sing to God. In fact throughout the whole Bible, God’s people are pictured singing. We will even sing in heaven.

And as you can see in this psalm, this singing is supposed to be loud and passionate. This explains why some people raise their hands and close their eyes when they sing. They are worshipping God.

We sing because of God’s character and his actions.

You’ve probably noticed that at church you sing about God. He’s the subject of every song. There is a good reason for this. The Bible teaches us to sing to God because he is so great.

Many songs focus on aspects of God’s character and praise him for those. We praise him for his compassion, mercy, love, and grace. And we also praise him for what he does. We praise him because he saved us through Jesus, and he takes care of us each day.

But why singing?

You might be wondering still why we worship God through songs. Well, think about how songs move us. Music stirs our emotions like nothing else can.

And everyone can sing. Ok, so not everyone should be a soloist, but everyone can praise God through song. It’s something we all participate in doing. This is why singing has been the focus for worshipping God’s people since the beginning.
