How should you think about the black and white - and gray - areas as a Christian?

Key Points:

  • As a follower of Christ you should find out what pleases God and do it. This is one of the basics of Christianity. As Christians, we want to live lives that honor God, and in order to do that, we have to turn to the Bible. Jesus is constantly talking about what pleases God and how we should live our lives.
  • “Black and white” sins are easily identifiable. These are the sins like adultery, murder, and lying. Everyone knows these things are sinful and wrong, even if you have never read the Bible. They blatantly affect others in a negative or hurtful way.
  • The “gray area” is where it starts to get a little tricky.Things that are on this list are not as clearly sinful. The “gray area” sins are sins that aren’t clearly stated in the Bible. Some people say that dancing is wrong, or that drinking any alcohol is a sin. The apostle Paul dealt with this in his letter to the Romans. He chose to look at that gray area from a different, heart-centered perspective.
  • The bottom line is you have to be submitted to God. If you want to honor God in the “gray areas” you have to submit your heart to God, and this is what Paul said to the Romans. If drinking alcohol causes a friend to be tempted, then don’t do it because you care about your friend. If watching TV always leads to watching a promiscuous show, don’t do it.

Romans 14:12-13 Yes, each of us will give a personal account to God. So let’s stop condemning each other. Decide instead to live in such a way that you will not cause another believer to stumble and fall.

Talk About It
  1. What is your initial reaction to this topic? What jumped out at you?
  2. Brainstorm what you believe to be “black and white” sins. Do you think most people would agree with you? Explain.
  3. Now brainstorm the “gray areas”. What makes your list? What would have made your parents’ list? Explain.
  4. Look over Romans 14. What’s the bottom line attitude a Christian should have when it comes to sin? Why is it hard to have that attitude when you’re in the midst of a sin struggle?
  5. Is there a step you need to take based on today’s topic?
