Jesus mentions being “baptized with the Holy Spirit.” What’s that all about?
Key Points:
- What Jesus was explaining in Mark 1 is eventually revealed in Acts 2 when the Holy Spirit came upon the early disciples and they began to speak in other tongues. Acts is a transitional book, “descriptive” of what was happening in the church – not “prescriptive” for all time.
- In 1 Corinthians 12:13 (also Ephesians 4:5-6) the Apostle Paul explains that everyone who is a believer is baptized into the same Spirit. Some people in that church felt like their gifts (like speaking in tongues) made them more important than others.
- “Eisegesis” is interpreting Scripture in a way that expresses your own ideas or biases rather than the meaning of the text. “Exegesis” is interpretation that is faithful to the original meaning of the text.

Mark 1:8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit!
