Do you have a desire to know the Bible more? Find out how to memorize books of the Bible so that you can know God more.

Key Points:

  • If you want to start memorizing, go with the motto, “Simply start and start simply.” Start with memorizing Psalm 1 because it’s short, having only six verses. Start with one verse at a time and just repeat it over and over several times throughout the day.
  • Don’t view this exercise as another checklist item in your day. Just add it to the tasks you already do. For example; while driving to the store, washing dishes, or folding laundry.
  • The goal of memorizing is to meditate or think on God’s word. So, the more of God’s word you have memorized, the more you can meditate on it.
  • As you memorize, ask the who, what, where, and when questions to understand the context of the passage.
  • Use these principles: (1) have a plan; (2) have a partner, someone to help you and hold you accountable; (3) be patient; (4) commit to perfection, meaning try to memorize exact wording and not a paraphrased version
  • Don’t just memorize the Bible so you can pull out a verse when talking with someone. Memorize it because it’s through the Word that God has revealed himself. The goal is to know God and walk with him. And, of course, practice what you’ve memorized. Let the truth of God’s word change you from the inside out.

Quote This:

Psalm 1:1-6

Oh, the joys of those who do not
follow the advice of the wicked,
    or stand around with sinners,
    or join in with mockers.

But they delight in the law of the Lord,
meditating on it day and night.
They are like trees planted along the riverbank,
    bearing fruit each season.
Their leaves never wither,
and they prosper in all they do.

But not the wicked!
They are like worthless chaff, scattered by the wind.
They will be condemned at the time of judgment.
Sinners will have no place among the godly.
For the Lord watches over the path of the godly,
but the path of the wicked leads to destruction.
