A recent article on BuzzFeed reminds us that Christians need to learn how to represent God's truth in a culture that often tries to enforce a secular ideology.

Talking Points:

  • There are two sides on the issue, but the secular agenda has gone from getting everyone to accept their viewpoint to forcing everyone to agree with it.
  • The question of gay marriage is not exactly the same as the question of whether same-sex behavior is a sin. Our secular culture has made gay marriage a law, and Christians are told to obey the law. But God’s word has something to say about homosexual acts, and we must elevate his truth above our cultural norms.1 Corinthians 6:9-10
  • The Christian response is to have compassion plus biblical standards. Nobody wins when we are hateful and bigoted. In this new day and age, we need to learn how to disagree with someone while loving them.
Discussion:
  1. Initial reactions to this topic? What jumped out at you?
  2. What would you do if you were in the shoes of Chip and Joanna Gaines?
  3. What is the “Thought Mafia”, and what are some ideas they are trying to normalize in our culture? Why?
  4. Read 1 Corinthians 6:9-10. What does the Bible say about homosexual acts? Does it matter to you what it says? Explain.
  5. If a gay friend of yours was getting married, would you go? Why or why not?
  6. How can a Christian show compassion while at the same time upholding a biblical standard? Give a few examples.
  7. Is there a step you need to take based on today’s topic?
