Have you ever struggled with overcoming fear or anxiety? You’re not alone, and believe it or not, even Jesus’s disciples, who walked with him and witnessed his miracles, struggled with fear when a violent storm looked like it would capsize the boat they were in.
Luke 8:22-25 One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.”So they got into a boat and started out. As they sailed across, Jesus settled down for a nap. But soon a fierce storm came down on the lake. The boat was filling with water, and they were in real danger. The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and the raging waves. Suddenly the storm stopped and all was calm. Then he asked them, “Where is your faith?” The disciples were terrified and amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “When he gives a command, even the wind and waves obey him!”
Even though many of us believe Jesus is the Lord and God of the universe, we, like the disciples, can be overcome with fear when life gets scary.
We Can’t Control the Storms
One of the reasons it is scary to be in a storm is that we have no control over it. We either “get through” storms or we wait for them to pass. And many of us aren’t comfortable with this. Like the disciples, we react out of fear instead of trusting in Jesus. When we react out of fear, we hand over control of our lives to it, and fear will take us places we never wanted to go.
How to Overcome Fear
We can only overcome fear with faith. We must trust that Jesus is bigger than the storms of our lives and that his will is bigger and greater than we can imagine. We need to shift our focus from ourselves and our situations (storms) and instead shift them to God.
The unknown evokes fear, but if we choose to have faith and to trust in God and what he is doing, we will have the freedom to not fear the storms of life – even if those storms haven’t yet passed.
