HOW IT WORKS

Hey there! You’ve found one of our “Start Pages” at pursueGOD.org. In this section we’ll explain how to use this page with a group or mentor. If you’re already connected with a mentor, keep reading to learn how it works. If you need us to connect you with someone to help you pursue God, click here.

Before you start…

At pursueGOD.org, our mission is to empower conversations to help people pursue God. We believe that real life change happens when people have honest, informed conversations. But keep this in mind: no one can pursue God for you. If you’ve been invited into a mentoring relationship, your mentor is ready to invest in you. But don’t make your mentor work harder than you. Be “all in” with your pursuit of God, no matter where you stand right now.

The FLEX Method

So here’s how to pursue God with our free online resources. We call it the “FLEX” method, and it takes just three simple steps:

  1. FIND A TOPIC. Browse our resources and pick a topic that you want to learn about (scroll down on this Start Page for recommended topics). All of our content starts with a short video and includes a summary article.
  2. LEARN ABOUT IT. This is where you take ownership. On your own, watch the video and check out the related topics as needed. Some people like to journal on the topic, going through the discussion questions ahead of time and taking notes. How you prep is up to you, but remember: no one can pursue God for you. You’ll get out of this what you put into it.
  3. EXPLORE IT TOGETHER. This is where your group or mentor fits in. Get together in person or over the phone, and simply have a conversation. That’s where real life-change happens: when people have honest, informed conversations.

And that’s it. One topic at a time, discover the truth of the Bible. Talk about life, faith, family, and more. Our tools empower conversations so you can pursue God at your own pace. And when you’re ready to go “full circle” in your pursuit of God, we recommend that you complete “The Pathway”.

The Pathway

At PG, we want to see people around the world living out a full-circle pursuit of God: trusting Jesus, honoring God, and helping others pursue God. To help you to do this, we’ve put together a 3-month track called “The Pathway”. It’s an expanded version of our Foundations series, and it will guide you through the most basic steps you need to take to become a whole-hearted follower of Jesus. Go through The Pathway with your mentor, and soon you’ll be ready to help someone else pursue God.

Getting Trained

Becoming a mentor at pursueGOD.org starts with connecting with a pastor, leader, or mentor to go through the training materials below. There you’ll learn how to invite and invest using our free online tools. Eventually, you’ll be able to train others to become mentors… and your impact will last for generations. That’s the idea behind “full-circle” faith, and it’s what Jesus had in mind all along. Join the movement!

MENTOR TRAINING

Training at pursueGOD.org works through video playlists that are designed to introduce you to our disciple-making tools. Here’s how it works:

  1. Watch the training playlist (below) and discuss the videos with a group or mentor.
  2. Practice mentoring for 3 weeks and complete the Daily Journal for Disciple-makers.
  3. Start mentoring. Use a journal for tracking and follow up (download this to learn how).
  4. Return to this page for follow up training in the weeks and months ahead (see topics below).

Church Workshop

Churches can use this training in a workshop setting. We recommend four 30-minute sessions for a total of 2 hours. Download and print off the Mentor Training Packet (pdf) for use during the workshop. Also hand out Using a Journal for Disciple-making to trainees and coaches.

Prep before the workshop with the following checklist:

  • Create a church-wide process for taking mentor requests.
  • Create a church-wide process for registering trained mentors.
  • Assign a mentoring admin at your church. This is the person who oversees “handoffs” at your church, connecting trained mentors to those who have requested help. This will be critical once you have mentors ready to serve.
  • Create a follow up strategy for your mentors. Each newly trained mentor should be assigned a “coach” who will follow up with him or her over the next 6 months.

The coach’s job is as follows:

  • If possible, lead discussion groups for each session with his or her trainees during the workshop.
  • Coordinate 3-6 week practice sessions for trainees following the workshop, either as a group or in pairs.
  • Serve as a liaison between your trainees and the mentoring admin to help them get connected to the mentoring needs in your church.
  • Follow up at least once a month with your mentors for 6 months or more. Use topics at www.pursueGOD.org/mentor.

Getting Rejected in Mentoring

What if you keep getting rejected in mentoring or disciple-making? Here are three things to think about if this is you.

Working Your Hit List

One of the most common questions that comes up in mentoring is how to actually get started with people you want to mentor.

How to Power Through in Mentoring

It’s easy to give up and stop trying to help someone pursue God. Here’s how to power through the challenges and discouragement to make a difference.

How NOT to Start Mentoring

Starting is important. How you begin a mentoring relationship sets the course for what’s to come. Find out here how to start a mentoring relationship on the right foot.

The Mentoring Law of Discovery

Great mentors understand the fundamental law of mentoring: truth is discovered. You can’t force someone to see what you see.

Whatever area of ministry you’re involved in at your church, mentoring with the tools at pursueGOD.org will increase your impact.

4 Stages of Biblical Mentoring

Jesus calls all of us to go out and make disciples, but understanding these four stages will help you to do it effectively.
