Adopting a biblical worldview is more than an intellectual exercise or a change of opinion. It requires a fundamental transformation from the inside out.

Talking Points:

  • When we repent, we are showing our willingness to turn from our perspective to God’s perspective. We are submitting ourselves to Jesus as Lord of our lives. We’re accepting the grid of Jesus. John 3:2
  • Jesus was introducing a concept that would be at the heart of a Christian worldview. A relationship with God cannot be earned by years of moral living or religious study. It happens in a single moment when a person is “born again” by trusting in Jesus. John 3:3
  • Lasting life change doesn’t happen just through adopting a new grid; it also requires the saving power of Jesus’ work on the cross. John 3:14-15, John 3:16
Discussion:
  1. Initial reactions to this topic? What jumped out at you?
  2. Tell us about a time when someone or something really changed your way of looking at a particular issue. What happened?
  3. Read Luke 7:36-39, Luke 11:37-46, Luke 18:9-14. How would you describe the Pharisees’ “grid” for looking at life?
  4. Read John 3:3 and John 3:14-15. How is the grid Jesus offers different from the Pharisees’ grid?
  5. Read Numbers 21:4-9. Why did God choose such a dramatic series of events to teach a lesson? What were the main lessons God wanted them to learn? What does this story teach us today?
  6. Describe some ways that Christians today adopt the Pharisees’ approach.
  7. Read Romans 10:9. What is the difference between declaring with your words and believing in your heart? Why are both necessary for salvation?
  8. What is your reaction to a person being saved by simply trusting Jesus’ work for them on the cross?
  9. If you’ve had your defining moment, share with the group how it happened. How did God begin to change your life after your defining moment?
  10. Is there a step you need to take based on today’s topic?
