Learn about the authorship, date, and other background information that will help you better understand and apply the letter of 1 John.

Key Points:

  • 1 John does not list its author, but internal and historical evidence suggest it was John the son of Zebedee, the “disciple who Jesus loved” from the Gospel of John and probably the last living Apostle at the time of its writing.
  • 1 John addresses a false teaching called docetism, which taught that Jesus only seemed to be human but was actually a spirit.
  • 1 John was probably written between 90 and 95 A.D.

Quote This:

1 John 1:3-4 We proclaim to you what we ourselves have actually seen and heard so that you may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We are writing these things so that you may fully share our joy.
