Suicide rates have more than tripled among teenagers in recent years. It is a real issue confronting our teens and we need to be equipped to respond.

Key Points:

  • Suicide is a real issue for teenagers. Although the overall rate of suicides has dropped for the general population, suicide has more than tripled among teenagers. Suicide is now the second leading cause of death for teens.
  • Signs to watch out for:
    • Signs of depression like despair and hopelessness
    • Say, “Wouldn’t be missed” if they were gone.
    • Give stuff away like valuables or things that once mattered to them.
    • They have a plan. If asked, they have given thought to how they would end their life. This one is especially important to listen for because, if they have a feasible plan, an attempt may be imminent.
  • If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to engage with the teenager in a conversation. Be sure to ask questions, empathize, encourage professional help and be ready to report to the authorities if you feel their life may be in danger.

Psalm 34:18-19 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed. The righteous person faces many troubles, but the Lord comes to the rescue each time.
