One of the oldest stories in the Bible is about people wanting to get famous, and what happened to them when they tried.

Talking Points:

  • The people wanted to make a name for themselves so they decided to build a big tower so they could brag about it. Genesis 11:1-4
  • It’s not bad to be famous. It’s the reason most people want to be famous that’s bad- they care about getting recognition for themselves. Proverbs 21:24
  • Don’t want to be famous. But if you are, remember to point to God who gave you your talents, not to yourself. Genesis 11:5-9
Discussion:
  1. Initial reactions to this topic? What jumped out at you?
  2. Who is someone famous that you admire? Why do you admire them?
  3. Why would you want to be famous? How do you think your relationship with God might change if you became famous?
  4. Read Genesis 11:1-4. Why do you think the people chose to build a tower instead of something else? What would a tower represent in that day? What are some things that we do to make ourselves more popular or liked? How do these things take the focus off of God?
  5. Read Proverbs 21:24. Define arrogance. Why does God dislike arrogance?
  6. Read Genesis 11:5-9. Why do you think God wanted to disrupt the people from doing more? What might have happened had they been able to build more stuff to get more famous?
  7. What does it look like to be humble? Why does God prefer you to be humble?
  8. Is there a step you need to take based on today’s topic?
