Taking the lead on a song in a worship service is a great honor, privilege, and responsibility. There are a few basic things to remember.

You are the lead worshiper

Don’t forget that your role is not to perform, even though performance is a part of the job. At the end of the day you are the lead worshiper for the entire congregation. Be sure to model a heart of worship.

Sing in a comfortable key

Picking the key for your song is more important than you think. Be sure to sing in a key that is comfortable for you. But balance that out with picking a key that is not too out of reach for the average attender. This can sometimes be tricky, and require careful consideration.

Sing the melody

This is a very basic principle. As worship leader, you need to make sure the melody is easy to identify for the average attender. Usually this means that you need to sing the melody yourself. In some cases you may switch to harmony – and when this is true, be sure that another vocalist picks up the melody and has the dominant voice.
