Once you’ve had your defining moment of faith, there are three simple signs that you’re “all in” as a follower of Jesus.

Talking Points:

  • When Jesus told his disciples to baptize new believers, he was calling for more than an initiation rite. Baptism is a symbol of going “all in” with faith. Romans 6:4
  • Sadly many Christians cheapen the work of Christ on the cross and take his sacrifice for granted, continuing to live a “me first” lifestyle and ignore the commands of God. But Jesus told his disciples to teach the new believers to “obey all the commands”. Matthew 28:20, Galatians 5:1
  • Jesus called fishermen instead of Pharisees for a simple reason. He wanted regular people – not “professionals” – to go make disciples. If you’re a Christian, God is calling you to personally walk with someone and help them pursue God. Mark 1:16-18
Discussion:
  1. Initial reactions to this topic? What jumped out at you?
  2. Tell us about a time you went “all in” for some hobby or activity. How did that change the way you lived?
  3. Read Matthew 28:18-20. How does baptism relate to making disciples? Is baptism an optional act for Christians? Explain. Why do you think people hesitate to be baptized?
  4. Read Matthew 28:18-20 again. What comes after baptism? Why do you think Jesus said “Teach them to OBEY…” instead of “Teach them to KNOW…”?
  5. What are some of the most common areas where Christians fail to “obey” in our world today? Why are these hard for us to obey?
  6. Give some real world examples of what a “Christ-centered” life might look like today?
  7. Look at Matthew 28:18-20 once more. What is Jesus’ basic command? To whom is this command given? Do you think it applies to us today? Explain.
  8. In verse 18, why do you think Jesus reminds us of his authority?
  9. In verse 20, why do you think Jesus reminds us of his ongoing presence?
  10. What can you do to take the next step in your pursuit of God?
  11. Is there a step you need to take based on today’s topic?
